The NBCD School at the Naval & Maritime Academy (NMA) continues its commitment to enhancing the professional skills of naval personnel by conducting specialized firefighting training sessions for Women Sailors of the Eastern Naval Command. Following the initial session held on 11th December 2024, a second session was organized on 25th February 2025 successful provide training to those who could not participate in the first session. This training initiative brought together seventeen (17) Women Sailors from key establishments, including SLNS Tissa, SLN Dockyard, SLNS Kashyapa, FAF4, SLNS Walagamba, SLNS Gokanna, SLNS Vijayaba, and NMA.
The training covered essential firefighting competencies, including the principles of fire chemistry, proper handling of portable fire extinguishers, firefighting organization onboard ships, and the operation of major firefighting systems. A hands-on practical firefighting exercise immersed participants in realistic fire scenarios, allowing them to apply their skills in a controlled environment. This tailor-made programmed provided valuable experience, enhancing the Women Sailors’ ability to respond effectively during emergencies and equipping them with the technical expertise and confidence required for their roles.
This initiative underscores the Sri Lanka Navy’s dedication to promoting gender equality and ensuring that Women Sailors are equipped with the necessary skills to perform their duties efficiently. By empowering women through specialized training, the programme supports the strategic vision of the Sri Lanka Navy and national policies promoting gender equality.
