The NBCD School at the Naval & Maritime Academy (NMA) conducted a specialized firefighting training session on 11th December 2024 for women sailors of the Eastern Naval Command. Spearheaded by the Commandant of the Naval and Maritime Academy and endorsed by the Commander Eastern Naval Area, the initiative brought together 18 women sailors from key establishments, including SLNS Tissa, SLN Dockyard, SLNS Kashyapa, FAF4, SLNS Walagamba, SLNS Gokanna, SLNS Vijayaba, SLNS Gotabaya and NMA. The programme underscored the  commitment of Sri Lanka navy for promoting gender equality and enhancing the professional capabilities of its personnel.
The training covered essential firefighting competencies, including the principles of fire chemistry, the proper handling of portable fire extinguishers, firefighting organization onboard ships, and the operation of major firefighting systems. A hands-on practical firefighting exercise immersed participants in realistic fire scenarios, allowing them to apply their skills in a controlled environment. This customized programme provided valuable experience, enhancing the women sailors’ ability to respond effectively during emergencies and equipping them with the technical expertise and confidence required for their roles.
The session played a crucial role in preparing the women sailors to meet the demands of modern naval operations. Aligned with the strategic vision of Sri Lanka Navy and national policies promoting gender equality, this initiative marked a significant step in empowering women in the maritime sector. By fostering professional development and inclusivity, the Sri Lanka Navy demonstrated its dedication to build a skilled and prepared workforce capable of upholding the highest standards of service and readiness.
