34TH JUNIOR STAFF COURSE COMMENCES AT NMA

The Inaugural Ceremony of the 34th Junior Naval Staff Course (JNSC) was held at the Mini Auditorium of the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) on 08th January 2024. The Commandant, Naval and Maritime Academy, Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage, graced the occasion as the chief guest.The Training Captain, the Commanding Officer,  Course Coordinators, Officers in Charge of Schools and Directing Staff of JNSC also attended in the event.

The 34th JNSC is comprised of 22 Student Officers (SOs) including 02 officers from Indian Navy and one each from Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Air Force. Moreover, Officers of Executive, Marine Engineering, Logistics, Special Boat Squadron and Provost Branch and an Officer from Volunteer Naval Force joined NMA for this course.

The JNSC is comprised of two semesters, first 18 weeks being the first semester which SOs engage in full time studies, whereas the aim is to provide comprehensive academic, professional and operational training. The curriculum encompasses both theoretical and practical aspects, fostering the development of qualities and capabilities necessary for the Junior Officers to evolve into competent and professional naval officers in the future.The subsequent 26 weeks of second semester is to complete extended essay whilst working in appointments to confer with post graduate Diploma in Defence Management from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

Addressing the SOs at the inaugural ceremony, the Commandant emphasized the importance of acquiring essential knowledge to become renewed mid-career officers with more knowledge, confidence, enhanced communication skills and broader vision, in order to perform well in future command and staff assignments.. Further Commandant thanked the Indian Navy for sending very senior officers for the course accepting our invitation in order to enhance the collaboration between regional navies. He congratulated the SOs  inspiring them with words of encouragement, guidance  and wished them best of luck for the successful completion of the course with a thought that these officers will shape the future army, navy and air force through sheer professionalism and innovative thinking. This event was a pivotal moment in the journey of these SOs as they are going to embark on a new chapter of their lives
