RESTRUCTURED CENTRAL NAVAL LIBRARY OPENS AT NMA

The Central Naval Library, established at the Naval & Maritime Academy, Trincomalee, is considered one of the most important venues in the SL Navy. The library, which was started in the 1980s, was re-established, adding some improvements at its present location, on 08th March 2009, to meet the academic needs of trainee officers, sailors, and the directive staff.

Since the beginning of the library until 2022, there has been no qualified resource personnel, and it has been functioning using conventional methods. With the arrival of LCdr AMPK Abeysinghe, a graduate of Library and Information Technology, as the Librarian on 27th December 2022, he initiated the restructuring process with the guidance of the then Commandant. Now, it has been rearranged, utilizing the library census for weeding, and implementing an automation mechanism with the support of the Koha library management system for the latest catalog management, acquisition and lending of books.

Accordingly, a reliable, reader-friendly atmosphere is available in the library under the following sections:

  • Lending Section
  • Reference Section
  • Permanent Reference Section
  • Children Section
  • Magazine Section

The student officers of advanced courses and the directing staff have access to the library of Sir John Kothalawala University to examine the availability of desired reading materials with the support of the novel implementation. Further, it provides the reader with an opportunity to access the following databases:

  • Emerald online
  • Hein online
  • IEEE
  • Taylor & Francis
  • Hinari
  • Research4life

Moreover, the library has the facility to check plagiarism of any academic research, theses and articles and the 22 LLMC course participants have been given personal passwords for the above-mentioned databases for broadening their knowledge.

At present, the naval library occupies approximately 20,000 resources, including books, magazines, maps, and CDs, which contain great academic value.
