The passing out parade and commissioning ceremony of twenty three (23) Midshipmen of the 35th and 36th intake KDU (Technical), who have successfully completed their basic naval training, was held at the main Parade Ground of the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee on 30th June 2023.
The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, graced the parade as the Chief Guest and took the salute on the invitation of the Commandant Naval & Maritime Academy, Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage. The ceremony was held with the participation of clergy of all religions, Defence Attaches, Senior officers from Navy Headquarters and Eastern Naval Command, senior officers from sister services, and parents of the newly commissioned officers.
The climax of the day’s preceding events began with the presentation of a special award by the Commander of the Navy in recognition of the commitment, dedication, skills, and outstanding performance. Midshipman SH Madanayaka of the 36th Intake KDU secured the best Technical Officer award.
Addressing the congregation, the Commander of the Navy, reminded them that it was a great honour for him to stand as the chief Guest of the passing out parade at the prestigious Naval & Maritime Academy. He elucidated that young officers who would become leaders need to uphold the core values of the Sri Lanka Navy, including honour, honesty, integrity, loyalty, and courage, among others, as well as an ethos that will guide them for the rest of their lives. Further, he said that he was sure that young officers would serve the nation at its best with the responsibility of safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the mother land. He highlighted that the country always comes first and private benefits always come second. Moreover, he advised the newly commissioned officers to always be concerned more about character than reputation. Finally, the Commander of the Navy congratulated the newly commissioned officers.
The glittering spectacle concluded with a spectacular drill display, a cultural performance, and a Band display, followed by a ceremonial sunset held in accordance with time-honoured naval customs.
