NMA held its 1st commandant’s chess challenge trophy – 2022  

The ‘Commandant’s Chess Challenge Trophy 2022’ organized by Officer Training Wing, Naval & Maritime Academy was held at the Examination Hall, NMA on 29th and 30th July 2022. Commandant, Commodore Damian Fernando, who initiated the championship, inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest on 29th July 2022 at 1500hrs. The event was organized by Lt. (INF) MNG Jayarathne, a national level chess player.   

This championship was commenced with a series of chess workshops conducted by Lt. (INF) MNG Jayarathne, throughout the dockyard with the participation of officers, officer under trainees, sailors, and sailor under-trainees. The Commandant’s Chess Challenge Trophy was held on 29th and 30th July 2022 at the Examination Hall, NMA with the participation of 60 players representing fleet and establishment within Dockyard. The awarding ceremony was held on 30th July 2022 from 1700hrs at the Examination Hall and the Chief guest was the Training Captain Naval and Maritime Academy.   The winners of the Commandant’s Chess Challenge Trophy are;

 Champion- Ordinary Seaman JASC Jayasooriya

 1st Runners up- Lieutenant AS Mendis

 2nd Runners up- Lieutenant SWS Udayanga

Women’s champion – Sub Lieutenant RMPS Rathnayake          

This timely event was organized with the motive of conveying the significance of the chess game and strengthening the mental well-being of all naval persons through the game of chess.
