Both Men and Women Rugby Teams of Naval and Maritime Academy which comprised of Training Command emerged champions of Inter Command Rugby Tournament -2022 which was held at the Rugby ground of SLNS Gemunu in Welisara from 3rd to 5th June. More than 250 players representing all Naval Commands, participated in this tournament to unleash their skills in the field.
Men’s Championship was conducted under 10 – A side category, while women’s segment was conducted under 7 – A side category. After three days of tussle, the Training Command won both men’s and Women’s Inter Command Rugby Championships. The unbeaten Training Command men’s were able to maintain its standard throughout the tournament and due to their solid defense skills opponents failed to score a single try throughout the tournament.
In the very first day of the Inter Command Rugby Tournament both men’s and women’s team beat Eastern Naval Command teams comprehensively. In the second day Training Command men’s team beat Western Command team, North Central Command team ,Southern Command team and secured group top position.
In the quarter finals Training Command Men’s team beat North Western Naval Command and in the semi-finals Training Command team beat the Eastern Naval Command and qualified to play for the finals. The deadly co-ordination of the backs, execution of game plans and fitness level made the Training Command unbeatable champions even in the finals against the afloat command. The Training Command team scored 24 points while the Afloat command team couldn’t make a single point.
The Training command women’s team selected for the finals after beating the Eastern Command in the semi-finals. Like the men’s team, women’s team too was able to score 19 points while the Western Command team couldn’t make a single point. The best of the best bestowed at the awarding ceremony.
Rear Admiral PAJN Ponnamperuma graced the finals and prize awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest.
