The local educational tour of the 28th Sub Lieutenant Technical Course (Logistics) took place from 25th November to 1st December 2024, with the participation of 18 Student Officers. The tour provided valuable exposure to diverse logistics and operational environments in Sri Lanka. The officers visited prominent institutions, such as the Central Bank at Sri Lanka, Treasury and the Department of Customs. Also they visited South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT), MAS Silueta and Lion Brewery management to obtain deep knowledge about the modern industrial trends and the supply chain. Visits to Sri Lanka Army Ordinance Corps (SLAOC), Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (SLEME), Panagoda and Sri Lanka Air Force Logistics Depot in Katunayake, gave insights in to the Logistics practices by sister forces. Visit to Sri Lankan Airlines Catering & Warehousing highlighted advanced supply chain management, warehousing and operational excellence in aviation and modern techniques in catering. The tour emphasized practical learning by exploring real-world applications of logistics principles, offering a comprehensive understanding of industries’ logistical frameworks. This initiative not only enhanced the officers’ technical knowledge but also prepared them to manage complex logistic challenges effectively in future. The Officer In Charge of Logistics and Management School and Senior Course Coordinator, Captain (S) Akhila Mendis and Lt (S) Chamara Kekulawala also accompanied the Student Officers.

The tour party visited Sri Lanka Customs and the Colombo Stock Exchange. At Sri Lanka Customs, the officers gained insights into customs procedures, trade facilitation, and regulatory framework. The visit to the Colombo Stock Exchange provided an understanding of financial markets, trading systems, and the role of capital markets in economic growth.

The Student Officers visited the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Treasury, and the South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT). At the Central Bank and Treasury, they explored monetary policies, fiscal management, and economic governance. The SAGT visit provided practical insights into port operations, container handling, and the logistics behind efficient maritime trade.
27th November 2024
The officers visited Lion Brewery, MAS Silueta, and Army Logistics in Panagoda. At Lion Brewery, they observed large-scale beverage production and distribution processes. Student Officers were interested in the Automated production line and machine handling equipment. The MAS Silueta visit showcased advanced apparel manufacturing and supply chain operations and gave an insights on maintaining standards. At Army Logistics Panagoda, they visited SLAOC and SLEME and gained insights into military supply chain management, inventory systems, and operational logistics framework of the SLA.
28th November 2024
The officers visited the Sri Lankan Catering and Warehousing at Katunayake, learning about aviation Catering and Warehousing. They gained insights into maintenance of prescribed standards from procurement of victual to serving the customer onboard which was very important. They were fascinated by the advanced techniques and equipments used by the Sri Lankan Catering Service. Thereafter, they visited Sri Lanka Air Force Logistics Depot in Katunayake where they were exposed to the Supply Chain Management practices used by the SLAF. They were able to compare Equipment Provisioning and Accounting System (EPAS) used by the SLAF to the Integrated Logistic Management System (ILMS) used by SLN Later, they attended a interactive session on ‘Sommelier’s guide’ at Malima Club House Uswetakeiyawa, conducted by Commander (S) Tharanga Wijesekara, enhancing their knowledge on varieties of wine and its significance.
29th November 2024 and 30th November 2024
From 29th to 30th November 2024, the officers travelled from Colombo to Naval Leave Center, Diyathalawa, enjoying the scenic beauty of landscapes and experiencing the dynamics of the hill country. The journey offered educational and cultural insights. On the evening of 30th November, a social gathering was held, fostering camaraderie among participants and marking the culmination of a productive and enriching educational tour.
01st December 2024
On 1st December 2024, the officers visited the Golden Ridge Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, enjoying its serene ambiance and picturesque surroundings. They were exposed to the house front office/housekeeping, office/stewarding and catering management techniques used by the hotel. The elegant setting and hospitality of the hotel offered a fitting conclusion to their insightful and enriching the journey through various logistical and operational sectors. The visit concluded at the Mariners Restaurant Nuwara Eliya, after which Student officers proceeded on their programmed leave, concluding a successful and insightful learning experience.
