LECTURE ON “UNVEILING THE UNIQUE ‘MAHA THUWAKKUWA’ AND HISTORY OF SRI LANKAN WEAPON” BY MR. CHAMIKARA PILAPITIYA

An informativel lecture was held at the Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda Auditorium on 03 Nov 24. The guest lecturer was, an independent researcher and historian Mr. Chamikara Pilapitiya. He shared his extensive knowledge on Unveiling the Unique Maha Thuwakkuwa and History of Sri Lankan Weapons” highlighting the advanced technology of firearms which were used in ancient Sri Lanka, especially during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras. The Commandant Naval & Maritime Academy, Deputy Area Commander of the Eastern Naval Command, all Officers, Officer Under Trainees and Sailors within the bases of the Naval Dockyard and fleet units attended the event. 

During his lecture Mr. Chamikara delved into the craftsmanship, cultural context and historical relevance of these weapons, which have played a critical role in ancient Sri Lanka’s defense and heritage. This lecture not only provided valuable insights into the significance of firearms in Sri Lanka but also fostered a great appreciation for the country’s unique heritage among the naval personnel.

As a premier naval training institute of the Sri Lanka Navy, NMA frequently embraces educational initiatives and events like this to enhance the existing knowledge of all under trainees. Also, it plays a pivotal role in connecting history with contemporary military practices, ensuring that the lessons of the past are not forgotten.
