The men’s handball team of the Naval and Maritime Academy comprised of the Training Command became the Champions of the Inter Command Handball Tournament 2024 which was held at SLNS Pandukabaya from 03rd to 06th April 2024. More than 200 players representing all Naval Commands participated in this tournament to unleash their skills in the court. Men’s teams were divided into 2 groups consisting of 05 teams to Group A and 4 teams to Group B while women’s teams were divided into 03 teams each for Group A and Group B. After four days of tussle, the women’s team of the Training Command secured the 3rd place and the men’s team of the Training Command won the Inter Command Handball Championship 2024. The unbeaten Training Command men’s team was able to maintain their standard by showing their solid defense and attacking skills for the opponents throughout the tournament.
At the semi- final match, the Training Command women’s team beat the Northern Command by scoring goals 09-02 and in the finals, the men’s team beat North Western Naval Command by scoring goals 28-16. The coordination of the players, execution of game plans and fitness level made the Training Command unbeatable champions during the Inter Command Handball Tournament 2024. Training Command men’s team captain LCdr EH Angammana was awarded the best goalkeeper award while Midshipman DMSM Dhanapala and AB(PTI) SDSSPP Sandanayake were awarded the best attacker and the best player awards respectively during the tournament. Commander North Central Naval Area Rear Admiral KMGNC Navarathne graced the finals and prize awarding ceremony as the Chief Guest.
