MARITIME LEADERSHIP EXERCISE (MARLEX) SHAPES FUTURE NAVAL LEADERS

The Officer Training Wing (OTW) recently conducted a pivotal Maritime Leadership Exercise (MARLEX) aimed at honing the leadership skills and decision-making acumen of 67 Officer Under Trainees (OUTs) including Lady Officer Under Trainees. Held on 27th and 29th March 2024, at Trincomalee harbour, this exercise marked a significant milestone in preparing future naval leaders for their roles.

MARLEX, meticulously designed by the OTW, served as a crucible for developing the leadership potential of OUTs. The exercise was meticulously crafted to foster sound decision-making abilities, crucial for navigating the complexities of future assignments. OUTs from following intakes participated in the exercise, showcasing a diverse cohort of talent and potential. The breakdown of attendees from different intakes is as follows:

BOC: 06 OUTs (02 Lady OUTs)

       DE 01/2023: 18 OUTs (09 Lady OUTs)

       36th & 37th Intakes KDU: 19 OUTs

       38th & 39th Intakes KDU: 15 OUTs

       SEC: 09 OUTs

The MARLEX capsule comprised four main operations, each serving as a litmus test for the trainees’ abilities. These operations included the Barrier Patrol Exercise ‘Waruna Kirana’, Cordon and Search Exercise at York Island ‘York Siege’, Anti-Human Smuggling Exercise ‘Freedom’, and Search and Rescue (SAR) Exercise ‘Carpathia’.

Throughout the exercise, OUTs were divided into four syndicates, ensuring equal participation and exposure to various scenarios. Each syndicate engaged in a series of exercises, briefings, and debriefings meticulously orchestrated by the OTW. Real-time situations, crafted by the OPS room and simulated by OTW staff, challenged OUTs to make critical decisions under pressure, thereby enhancing their decision-making skills and leadership capabilities.

The MARLEX culminated successfully at 1800hrs on both 27th and 29th March 2024, following comprehensive debriefing sessions and closing remarks by Officer Training Officers. This exercise not only provided invaluable hands-on experience but also instilled in OUTs the confidence and competence required to navigate the complexities of future naval leadership roles.

In conclusion, MARLEX stands as a testament to the commitment of the Officer Training Wing in grooming the next generation of naval leaders. By providing a platform for practical learning and skill development, MARLEX ensures that future leaders are equipped to uphold the highest standards of leadership and decision-making.
