OPENING ADDRESSES OF THE DIRECT ENTRY 1/2023 AND 66TH INTAKE CADET ENTRY OFFICER UNDER TRAINEES (OUTS)

The Naval and Maritime Academy witnessed a momentous occasion on 16th January 2024, as the opening addresses for the Direct Entry 01/2023 and the 66th Intake of Cadet Entry Officer Under Trainees (OUTs) were held at the Mini Auditorium. Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage, RWP, RSP, USP, ndc, psc, the Commandant of the Naval and Maritime Academy, graced the event as the chief guest.

57 Officer Under Trainees will undergo naval training in two separate courses, with the Direct Entry 01/2023 comprising 24 OUTs, including 14 Lady OUTs specializing in Information Technology, Band, and General Executive (VNF). The courses, spanning 32 weeks, aim to provide a holistic blend of academic and advanced maritime training, covering both theoretical and practical aspects essential for the development of future naval officers.

Equally significant is the 66th Cadet Intake, featuring 33 OUTs, including 06 Lady OUTs, hailing from Executive, Logistics, and Infantry, Marine Engineering, and Electrical Engineering branches. This intake not only marks the largest in recent history but also the first-ever enlistment of lady officer cadets in the Naval and Maritime Academy. The cadet officers will undergo a rigorous 123-week training program, emphasizing academic excellence and advanced maritime skills, ensuring their evolution into competent and professional naval officers.

Addressing the newly enrolled OUTs during the opening ceremony, Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage emphasized core values such as hard work, commitment, discipline, teamwork, and the acquisition of essential knowledge. The Commandant stressed the importance of these qualities for future naval officers, highlighting their role in leading men and making sound decisions.

In his address, the Commandant underscored the historic significance of enlisting lady cadets under the Cadet Entry scheme for the first time in the academy’s history. This breakthrough not only represents a pivotal moment for gender inclusion but also a testament to the academy’s commitment to diversity and equal opportunities. As the ceremony concluded, Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage extended his heartfelt congratulations to all the Officer Under Trainees, acknowledging their dedication and resilience.
