MMTS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED STCW BASIC SAFETY COURSE NO. 06 (S) AND NO. 07(S) – 2023

Certificate awarding ceremony of Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) Basic Safety Course and Maritime English (Support Level) course no. 06 (S) and no. 07 (S) – 2023 was held at the Mini Auditorium, Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), Trincomalee on 19th October 2023 to mark the termination of both courses. The ceremony was Graced by the Commandant, Naval & Maritime Academy, Commodore Buddhika Liyanagamage, as the Chief Guest.

STCW Basic Safety course no. 06 (S) and 07 (S) – 2023 were commenced on 18th September 2023 with the participation of 20 sailors for each course including a woman sailor. Today Merchant Marine Training School, NMA produced the first ever woman sailor who is qualified in STCW basic safety module. Further, all the course participants were awarded with the certificates as they have successfully completed the courses.

The objective of this course is to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge to obtain Continuous Discharging Certificate (CDC). The course enhances the competencies of the participants to discharge their duties onboard merchant ships in a very successful and effective manner. The courses are conducted in accordance with the directives of the Director General of Merchant Shipping and the International Maritime Organization’s Constitution.

All instructors of the Merchant Marine Training School, instructors of NMA and visiting lecturers under the intensive supervision of the Commandant, Naval & Maritime Academy, made their fullest contribution to transform the course participants with a quality training required to perform as skilled seafarers in the field of merchant shipping.

This course will steer the future aspirations of sailors who wish to retire from the Sri Lanka Navy  in near future after serving the period of 22 years or 15 years (women sailors) or 12 years (after original enlistment) respectively and turning their careers into a new dimension.
