The Commencement of the STCW Basic Safety Courses at MMTS

Stepping into another phase, the Merchant Marine Training School commenced the STCW Basic Safety courses 06 & 07-2023 (s) on 18 Sep 23 and the opening remark was delivered by the Officer in Charge of MMTS LCdr (N) Dimuthu Kodikara, RSP, psc. The two courses are comprised with 40 under trainee sailors including one woman sailor. Both courses will be spanned for 5 weeks of time and are scheduled to be terminated on 20 Oct 23.

The objective of this course is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge as well as the training required to obtain the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC). The course enhances the competencies of the participants to carry out the duties onboard merchant ships in a very successful and effective manner. The courses are conducted in accordance with the directives of the Director General of Merchant Shipping and the International Maritime Organization’s Constitution.

This course will steer the future aspirations of sailors who wish to retire from the Sri Lanka Navy near future after serving minimum of 22 years or 12 years respectively and turning their careers into a new dimension.
