The certificate awarding ceremony of the inaugural Junior Life Saving Course organized by Naval and Maritime Academy was held at Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda Auditorium on 02nd July 2022. The Training Captain of Naval and Maritime Academy graced the event as the Chief Guest and Mr. Asanka Nanayakkara, the President of Sri Lanka Life Saving Association marked his presence as the guest of honour.
Being an ISO certified professional institute, The Naval and Maritime Academy commenced its first ever Junior Life Saving Course to enhance the lifesaving skills among naval personnel. The course commenced on 13th June 2022 and terminated on 02nd July 2022 with the participation of 11 SOUTs of Sub Lieutenant Technical Courses undergoing training at NMA. The course modules were covered during non-academic hours and the practical sessions were undertaken at Command Swimming pool and the Elephant Point beach area. The main objective of this training was to allow trainees acquiring lifesaving skills to become more competent in safeguarding the own life as well as the lives of others in danger. The course was conducted by the lifesaving Silver Medalist LS VGV Sandanuwan, VA 62899 under the guidance and directives of LCdr (CDO) PD Jayasekara. Accordingly eleven Student Officer Under Trainees from Sub Lieutenant Technical courses completed their initial lifesaving training.
The Course consisted of Freestyle & breast stroke swimming with head-up modes, methods of jumping, methods of floating, defense & releasing rescue at sea, lifesaving entry wading & dolphin, tube rescue, patient carrying methods, CPR procedure, chocking, bandaging & emergency handling. The Course participants were awarded with Basic Lifesaving and Water Safety certificates, International Lifesaving Junior Life Saver Certificates, and the CPR certificates by the Guest of Honour and Chief Guest. The President of Sri Lanka Life Saving Association, Mr. Asanka Nanayakkara conducted a brief awareness on the importance of life saving, job opportunities and its value at present. The chief guest mentioned the values and importance of learning lifesaving methods by naval personnel and also encouraged the gathering to take up lifesaving as a profession.
Members of the faculty, Student Officer Under Trainees, Officer Under Trainees, Sailor Instructors and Sailor Under Trainees were also present at the ceremony.
