ASTRO NAVIGATION SIMULATOR LAUNCHED AT THE NAVIGATION SCHOOL

Adding yet another important training tool to the NMA’s inventory, an Astro Navigation Simulator (ANS) was recently established at the Navigation School. The ANS was launched by Rear Admiral Rohan Joseph, the Commandant of the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in the presence of the Training Captain, faculty members, and the ANS project team led by Lieutenant Commander (L) SARK Jayathilaka.

The ANS was designed and developed by the Innovative and New Ideas Cell (INIC) of theNMA. It is considered a timely addition to the Navigation School, aimed at assisting the OUTs in enhancing both theoretical and practical aspects of Astro Navigation. This addition is expected to help OUTs better understand the theory of Astro Navigation through practical exposure in the following areas:

  • a. identification of planets and the solar system,
  • b. identification of all constellations,
  • c. identification of stars,
  • d. The ability to physically shoot stars and heavenly bodies using a sextant.
