Commodore Damian Fernando assumed duties as the 36th Commandant of the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee on 01st September 2021.
Commodore Fernando, who is a proud product of St. Joseph Vaz College, joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet to the 21st Intake on 12th September 1991 and successfully completed his basic naval training at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA); and commissioned as Acting Sub Lieutenant on 12th September 1993.
He followed the Sub Lieutenant Technical Course in NMA and achieved the first in order of merit. He is specialized in the fields of Gunnery and Missiles at the premier Naval Gunnery and Missiles training school of Indian Navy; INS Dronacharya and obtained the ‘Best All – Round Officer’ trophy. He was one of the key members of the pioneering team that introduced missiles to the Sri Lanka Navy Fleet. Commodore Fernando has followed the Engineer course on Naval Gun Maintenance in China. He holds Master’s of Science Degree in Management (Defence Studies) from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. He is an distinguish Alumni of APCSS at Hawaii-Honolulu and elected to the grade of Associate Fellow at the Nautical Institute (UK). Commodore Fernando took his appointment as the Commandant upon successful completion of the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS); the most prestigious Defence Academy of United Kingdom and awarded with post-nominal ‘rcds’. Further, he is the first navy officer who completed Master of Arts in International Security and Strategy from the King’s College London.
Commodore Fernando has held many key appointments as the Naval Armament Officer at Naval Armament Department in SLN Dockyard Deputy Director Naval Weapons at Naval Headquarters and Commander 4th Fast attack Craft Flotilla. He also has commanded Fast attack craft, Fast Gun Boats and Offshore Patrol Vessel SLNS Samudura in addition to serving onboard various ships.
Commodore Fernando has been decorated with Rana Sura Padakkama, Utthama Seva Padakkama and ten other Service Medals for his act of gallantry and meritorious service. He is a recipient of Commander of the Navy’s Commendation Badge with 4 stars for the 4 commendations received from four different Commanders of the Navy for his dedicated voluntary contribution and performances. He excelled in sports and represented Sri Lanka Navy Cricket team. He became the first ‘Ranaviru Real Star’, first ever Military reality programme in singing.
