Junior Naval Staff Course (JNSC) is one of the highest academic and professional training programmes conducted at NMA since 2005. The JNSC maintains the highest standards in every sphere of academics and other training activities.
The college has been accredited to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) and provides opportunities for Naval officers, officers of sister services as well as foreign military officers in the rank of Temporary Lieutenant Commander, Lieutenant, or equivalent to be conferred with Postgraduate Diploma in Defence Management (PG Dip in Def Mgt)
To qualify junior officers by imparting sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical training on naval administration and staff work to perform their specified duties in the most efficient manner in staff appointments.
JNSC course was not conducted during the period of 2006 to 2010 due to prevailed situation of the country. However, after a vacuum of five years, the fourth JNSC was commenced on 07th February 2011 and the courses have been continued thereafter.
The level of the course has been elevated by awarding the Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management by General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University from the seventh JNSC course onward. The opportunity has also been extended to the Officers of Sister Services to join since seventh course.
The Junior Naval Staff College will be the leading institution for instilling knowledge and skills on naval administration and staff work among mid-career level officers of the Sri Lanka Navy.
The Mission of Junior Naval Staff is to educate and prepare mid-career level officers in performing their assigned duties in the most efficient manner in staff appointments.
Officers in the rank of Temporary Lieutenant Commander or Confirmed Lieutenant in the Navy or equivalent in Army and Air Force, of all branches who have completed the sub tech course or an equivalent course.
RNF or equivalent in Army and Air Force officers who possess a bachelor's degree or have a minimum of seven years of commissioned service.
VNF or equivalent in Army and Air Force officers who possess a bachelor's degree with continuous service of 07 years.
Officers in the rank of Temporary Lieutenant Commander or confirmed Lieutenant with qualifications mentioned in above Para a, b and c, those who are following a foreign course at the time of calling applications and subsequently confirmed to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. However, such officers have to apply at the first available opportunity on arrival to Sri Lanka and will be subjected to the selection procedure.
If an officer is selected for any foreign course whilst following JNSC, he will be allowed to follow the foreign course and will be given an opportunity to continue and complete the course with the next course on arrival to Sri Lanka.
Those who have already completed a Junior Staff Course with the Sri Lanka Army or Sri Lanka Air Force or abroad need not apply for JNSC but will be eligible for all privileges and career prospects as per NAHA 5 memorandum dated 25th June 2019.
