At an impressive Passing Out Parade (POP) held at the main parade ground of the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee today (21 Dec), 36 Midshipmen of 60th Intake of the Naval and Maritime Academy passed out as Commissioned Naval Officers of the Sri Lanka Navy. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) of Indian Navy, Admiral Karambir Singh, PVSM, AVSM, ADC graced the event as the Chief Guest with the invitation of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva who attend the POP as Guest of Honour.
The Commander of the Navy and the Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy Commodore Prasanna Mahawithana received and accompanied the Chief Guest to take the salute of the Guard of Honour. Chief Guest has inspected the Guard of Honour and two divisions of Officers being passed out. Subsequently awarded with the prestigious Swords and commissioned as Acting Sub Lieutenants.
The inspiring and smartly turned out parade marked the culmination of two and half years long strenuous training of 60th Cadet Entry Intake conducted at the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA). Meanwhile newly Commissioned Officers marched off through the ramps of the parade ground on a majestic note, marking a memorable milestone of their naval career.
Addressing the august gathering, the Chief Guest expressed that he is honoured to be invited as the Chief Guest of this Commissioning Parade and extended his sincere appreciation to the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy for inviting him to this glamorous evening while congratulating the newly commissioned officers. Further, Chief Guest thanked the proud parents of Newly Commissioned officers for encouraging them to serve beloved motherland.
The distinguished gathering consist of religious dignitaries, Chief of Staff of the Navy Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugethanna, Naval Area Commanders, Director Generals of the Navy, Senior Officers representing Tri-Services, Defence Attaches, Senior Police Officers and government servants of the Area. Parents and family members of Officers commissioned were also presented at the ceremony. Consequently, those who excelled during the training were presented with special awards in recognition of their outstanding performances as follows.
The glittering ceremony culminated with the cultural performance presented by the Navy Cultural Troupe and a band display by the Navy band followed by a colourful ceremonial sunset. The commissioning parade was followed by a sumptuous Cocktail and a Guest Dinner held at Eastern Naval Command Wardroom with the participation of Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Special Invitees and Officers been passed out.
