In accordance with By – Laws of respective Degree programmes, the Naval and Maritime Academy is coordinating with the parent university to provide facilities for Student Officers (SOs)/ Officer Under Trainees (OUTs) to obtain Degrees and Post Graduate Degrees/Diplomas by conducting respective courses and examinations effectively, efficiently and transparently.
The Cadet Entry Basic Training Courses along with respective Sub Lieutenant Technical Courses conducted at NMA were accredited to the University of Kelaniya (UoK) on 22nd December 2001 for awarding Bachelor of Naval Science (BNS) Degrees for OUTs. As a result, the Director of Academic Studies office was established at the Naval and Maritime Academy on 31st July 2013 to facilitate OUTs and coordinate with the parent University for awarding respective degrees. Subsequently, the said courses conducted at NMA were accredited to the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) on 11th April 2011 for awarding Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degrees in three different disciplines.
Later, in addition to the Cadet Entry Basic Training Courses, the Long Logistics Management Course (LLMC) and Junior Naval Staff Course (JNSC) were accredited to the KDU for awarding Master of Business Administration in Logistics Management (MBA in LM) and Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management (PGD in DM) respectively to the SOs who successfully achieve the stipulated standards in assessments criteria of said Post Graduate Degree/ Diploma programmes.
