PROFICIENCY IN FIRE PREVENTION & FIRE FIGHTING COURSE
Sailors with 11 years of service, who wish to leave SLN on completion original enlistment and sailors who complete 21 years of service are eligible to apply irrespective of the branch. Those who have followed pre-retirement courses will not be considered.
On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/1-3 of STCW 78 as amended.
Duration of the course is 03 days (15 hrs) and course commences on every year as per the annual training calendar.
This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention 78 as amended chapter VI, section A-VI/1-2. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in fire prevention and fire fighting, a trainee will be competent to take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and of the ship and to use appliances correctly. The trainee will also have knowledge of fire prevention.
Following IMO Modal Course 1.20 are covered during the course as per approved syllabus.

Concept and application of the fire triangle to fire and Explosion Types and sources of ignition (Theory)
Flammable material found onboard need for constraint vigilant (Theory)
Fire Hazards,Organization of shipboard firefighting (Theory)
Selection of firefighting appliances and equipment’s (Theory )
Classification of fire and applicable extinguishing agent.(Theory)
Location of firefighting Appliances and emergency escape routes. Fire spread in different parts of the ship(Theory)
Fire smoke detection measures on ship and automatic alarm system. (Theory)
Maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire. (Theory)
Selection of firefighting appliances and equipment’s (Practical)
Fire and extinguish fires (Practical)
