PROFICIENCY IN PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES COURSE
Sailors with 11 years of service, who wish to leave SLN on completion original enlistment and sailors who complete 21 years of service are eligible to apply irrespective of the branch. Those who have followed pre-retirement courses will not be considered.
On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/1-1 of STCW 78 as amended.
Duration of the course is 03 days (15 hrs) and commences on every year as per the annual training calendar.
This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention 78 as amended code chapter VI, section A-VI/1. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in Personal Survival Techniques, a trainee will survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment.
The trainee will be able to:
Don a life jacket.
Don and use an immersion suit.
Safely jump from a height into the water.
Right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket.
Swim while wearing a life jacket.
Keep afloat without a life jacket.
Board a survival craft from ship and water while wearing a life jacket.
Take initial actions on boarding survival craft to enhance chance of survival.
Stream a drogue or sea anchor.
Operate survival craft equipment.
Following IMO Modal Course 1.19 are covered during the course as per approved syllabus.

Personal Life Saving Appliances
Emergency Radio Equipment
Personal Life Saving Appliances (Demonstration at Class Room & Sea).
