Commodore Prasanna Mahawithana assumed duties as the 34th Commandant of the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee, on 12th November 2019.
Commodore Mahawithana, who is a proud product of Ananda College, Colombo, joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet to the 17th Intake on 23rd November 1987 and successfully completed his Cadet and Midshipmen training at Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee.
He followed the Sub Lieutenant Technical Course and Anti-Submarine Warfare specialization Course at Indian Naval Ship Vendruthy, Cochin in India. Commodore Mahawithana followed his Staff Course at Naval War College, Pakistan from 2004/05 and was conferred with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree in War Studies by Bahiria University, Pakistan. Subsequently he was, selected to attend the Senior Naval Command Course at Naval Command College, Nanjing, China in 2016. Commodore Mahawithana is also an alumini of National Defence University in Pakistan, where he has followed National Security and War Course (NSWC). On successful completion above he was conferred with a Master of Science Degree in National Security and War studies by the same institution.
Commodore Mahawithana has served as the Training Commander at SLNS Gemunu and also the Training Officer for 4th Fast Attack Flotilla. During his appointments at Training establishments which includes three previous tenures at the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Batalanda as Directing Staff and Naval & Maritime Academy and SLNS Shiksha as the Training Captain.
Commodore Mahawithana served at sea onboard many platforms and commanded Landing Craft, Fast Attack Craft, Fast Gun Boat, SLNS Prathapa and Offshore Petrol Vessel, SLNS Samudura.
Commodore Mahawithana has held the positions of Director Naval Personnel, Acting Director Naval Victualing and Clothing, Deputy Director Naval Operations, Deputy Director Maritime Special Force and he has also entrusted with special appointment as Acting Director Logistic Management Cell, Head of Naval Research Wing and Acting Director Maritime Surveillance for over two years at the Naval Headquarters, prior being appointed as the Commandant of the prestigious Naval and Maritime Academy.
Commodore Mahawithana has been decorated for his gallantry and valor with Rana Sura Padakkama thrice, and for his exceptional service rendered with Utthama Seva Padakkama and Desha Puthra Padakkama, and nine other Service Medals.
Commodore Prasanna Mahawithana is married to Mrs. Dushani Dias and is blessed with two daughters, Devini Natasha and Sanduni Varshana.
