Commodore Dammika Kumara assumed duties as the 35th Commandant of the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee, on 31st July 2020.
Commodore Kumara, who is a proud product of Kagalu Maha Vidyalaya, Kegalle, joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet to the 6th Intake of General Sir John Kotalawala Defence Academy (KDA) on 06th October 1988 and successfully completed his basic Degree programme in Electrical Engineering stream at KDA. He had his basic naval training at Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in Trincomalee and commissioned as Acting Sub Lieutenant in 05th October 1990.
He followed the Sub Lieutenant Technical Course in NMA and Anti-Submarine Warfare specialization Course at Indian Naval Ship Vendruthy, Kochi in India. Commodore Kumara followed his Staff Course in China from 2005. Subsequently he was, selected to attend the Senior Naval Command Course at Naval Command College, Nanjing, China in 2015 and awarded with Post Graduate Diploma. Commodore Kumara is also an alumnus of University of Wollongong, Australia, where he has followed Master of Maritime Policy Programme in 2018 and conferred with Master’s Degree in Maritime Policy.
Commodore Kumara has served as the Training Commander at SLNS Shiksha and SLNS Shilpa. During his appointments at Training establishments which includes previous tenure at premier Training Institute of Sri Lanka Navy the Naval & Maritime Academy as Acting Training Commander, Deputy Training Commander and Coordinator for Junior Naval Staff College. He held the appointment as Head of Training Team of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Sapugaskanda, Sri Lanka.
Commodore Kumara served various sea and shore appointments during his naval career and commanded Fast Attack Craft, Fast Gun Boat, Fast Missile Vessel, SLNS Nandimithra and Offshore Petrol Vessel, SLNS Samudura.
Commodore Kumara has held the special appointment as Flag Lieutenant to Commander of the Navy (CofN), Aide & Personal Secretary to the CofN and Naval Assistant to CofN prior being appointed as the Commandant of this prestigious institution.
Commodore Kumara has been decorated with Utthama Seva Padakkama and ten other Service Medals. He is a recipient of Commander of the Navy’s Commendation Badge with 5 stars for the six commendations received from five different Commanders of the Navy for his dedicated voluntary contribution and performances.
Commodore Dammika Kumara is married to Mrs. Inoka Weerakoon in 2003 and is blessed with a daughter, Senethma Galamulage.
