The Naval and Maritime Academy, achieved another remarkable milestone with the inauguration of “Commandant’s Cup Sailing Regatta” to enhance the sailing skills of the future officers of the navy including friendly foreign navies and sister services.
Naval Academies of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan and Military Academy of the Sri Lanka Army along with 7 officer training intakes (batches) from NMA participated in this Regatta at picturesque Sandy Bay in historical city of Trincomalee.
The opening ceremony was held at the Shanthi Bahar memorial Sailing Club on 27th September 2018 with the participation of the Commandant as the Chief Guest and Mr. Sarath Kuragama representing Yachting Association of Sri Lanka (YASL).
Racing conducted on two days with total of 8 races for Open and Cup Championship. Highly competitive races were judged by the officials of YASL under the keen observation and assistance of the President Mr. Joseph Kenny. Principal race officer Mr. Lalin Jeerasinghe and race officer Mr.WPK Janaka, conducted the race whilst Mr. Asanka Goonawardene, Mr. Sarath Kuragama and Mr. Jeremy Bolling acted as the jury.
The closing ceremony and prize giving were graced by Rear Admiral KKVPH De Silva, WWV & Bar, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, ndu, the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy as the Chief Guest on 29th September 2018. Indian Naval Academy won the Open Championship while the 59th intake of midshipmen won the Cup Championship. Results of the championship are as follows.
